How to Dispose of Empty Camping Gas Canisters
When you need to empty the canister of all remaining gas there are 2 simple ways to go about it.
The first way is the burning method as below.
- This can be done simply by attaching your stove and leaving it to burn until empty, but that may take some time. (This should be done in a safe place and a lit stove should never be left unattended)
- Then you will need to puncture the canister (This can be done with a screwdriver or a nail etc) or using the crunchit tool to puncture the canister.
- The holes will make sure there is no remaining gas inside and allow people to see it is empty and safe, and therefore safe to add into your recycling bin at home.
The second method ( the one I use most it’s a little safer fire wise)
- Go out into the garden at least 15 paces from your house and in an open area with very good ventilation(middle of your lawn), screw on your stove top and simply open the gas valve to release the gas and leave it for an hour. (keep and children or pets away when using this method)
- When you come back to it it should be totally empty, this can be checked by trying to light the stove, and also the weight of the canister.
- Then you can go ahead and use your crunchit tool to puncture the canister for recycling in your household waste.
(only try to puncture a canister when you are sure the canister is empty after having burned off any remaining gas)
Tips For Disposing Of Empty Camping Gas Canisters
When it comes to disposing of camping gas cylinders, it’s important to handle them properly to ensure safety and environmental responsibility. Here are some guidelines to follow:
- Empty the Cylinder: Before disposal, ensure that the camping gas cylinder is completely empty. Use up all the gas in a controlled manner by connecting the cylinder to a compatible appliance and letting it burn until the fuel is depleted. Avoid puncturing or attempting to force the gas out of the cylinder, as this can be dangerous.
- Check Local Regulations: Different regions may have specific guidelines for the disposal of camping gas cylinders. Check with your local waste management or recycling facility to understand the regulations and recommended disposal methods in your area. They will provide the most accurate and up-to-date information on how to proceed.
- Recycling Options: In many cases, camping gas cylinders can be recycled. Look for recycling centers or facilities that accept gas cylinders, specifically those designed for camping or portable use. These facilities have the equipment and knowledge to safely handle and recycle the cylinders.
- Contact the Retailer or Manufacturer: Some retailers or manufacturers have take-back programs or specific instructions for disposing of their camping gas cylinders, this applies more to the larger calories type canisters. Reach out to them directly to inquire about proper disposal methods or any recycling initiatives they may have in place.
- Follow Safety Precautions: When handling empty gas cylinders, always follow safety precautions. Keep them away from heat sources, sparks, and flames.
Remember, it’s crucial to adhere to local regulations and guidelines for the proper disposal of camping gas cylinders. By doing so, you contribute to environmental conservation and minimize potential risks associated with improper handling or disposal of hazardous materials.

- Grab your empty fuel canister, take your crunchit tool and remove the orange plastic cover from the spike, then begin to screw on the crunchit tool to the canister.
- Allow your canister to sit for around 30 to 60 minutes to allow any remaining gas to escape(outdoors).
- With the crunchit tool still attached, press down firmly to allow the spike to penetrate the top of the fuel canister, move around the canister making 4-5 holes, then unscrew the tool and recycle your canister appropriately!
